Hello my autumn acorns,
Happy First Day of Fall!
Today, after starting a load of laundry and checking my email, I walked to Ripe Kitchen, less than a half mile down the road to get brunch. It is a beautiful overcast day with lots of leaves scattered across the sidewalk and the air of impending rain. Although it feels like fall, the weather is a bit warmer than it appears. It’s that transitory time when you want to feel cozy in your favorite sweater or sweatshirt, only to get really sweaty getting to wherever you’re going.
At the cafe, I ordered a black americano & poached eggs on toast. Immediately when I sat down outside, a sour smell crept up my nose. Their outdoor garbage can was right next to me. It was not an appetizing smell but I didn’t want to try to find another seat as it was rather crowded. (And you know me in social situations! I’m stubborn.) Do you ever wonder how long it takes to get used to a smell? We all know the smell hasn’t gone away, but we no longer smell it. Does our brain try to protect us by shutting down our olfactory sense just for those distasteful smells? Look that up for me, will you.
As I ate my poached eggs with mashed avocado & micro greens on toast with a knife and fork, I jotted down some thoughts in a tiny notebook. I’ve been thinking a lot about something and it was good to write a couple of things down. (The little notebook is detaching at the seam, so I will ned to find a replacement.) After a few anxiety-ridden sentences, I pivoted and decided to write down notes and questions for my feature film script. I started by re-reading my proof of concept script. I really liked it! A part of me was surprised that I had written it. It was fun to read and I’m looking forward to working on the project again.
After I finished my brunch, I went next door (literally!) to Primrose Hill Books. It’s a lovely shop with lots of books crammed into every nook and cranny. I spent far too much money on only four books, but what am I here for other than to enjoy simple pleasures like a new book?
Books purchased:
BURIED DEEP & Other Stories by Naomi Novik
THE WAGER by David Grann
THE MOST OF NORA EPHRON by Nora Ephron
DEATH AT LA FENICE by Donna Leon
Yesterday, I wrote about finding little joys during our day. What were yours today? Here are a few of mine: noticing a lovely painting in the stairwell of my apartment, the comforting smell of home cooked food from the flat below, a beautiful park very close by, and knowing you, dear reader, have spent time with me today.
Till next time,
Your American WereMack in London
P.S. I’ve added a Photos page. See if you can spy Kermit.
